Promoting your business on social media networks has become an extremely important part in company’s marketing strategies. Besides the familiar social media giants, ie Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, who have had their dominant positions in the online marketing world for a while, one you might not know as much about is a giant baby, Pinterest.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo sharing website where you can create, organize and share images of different subject areas by pinning your own or repining from other users that you find on the web.

The fastest growing standalone site

After launching back in March 2010, Pinterest, a newbie in the world of social networking, has seen explosive growth by reaching 11.7 million unique monthly U.S. visitors in January 2012, according to exclusive data reached by TechCrunch. This makes it the fastest standalone site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark in the U.S.

The article also revealed the average Pinterest visitor spends 98 minutes per month on the site. People spend an average of 2.5 hours on Tumblr and Facebook with 7 hours.

That being said, user growth for Pinterest is better than that of Facebook and Twitter at the same point in their respective histories.

The 3rd most popular social network

In an April 2012 article from Mashable, Experian Hitwise ranked Pinterest as the 3rd most popular social networking website in the U.S. with 104 million visits in March, only behind Facebook (7 billion) and Twitter (182 million).

The 50th most frequently visited website

In September 2012, comScore listed Pinterest in its list of “Top 50 most visited website in the U.S.”, and also noted that it was the first time Pinterest cracked its Top 50 properties ranking as it exceeded 25 million unique visitors for the month.

Why Pinterest?

By providing high quality images with quality content, you create opportunities to attract people to repin your images for their interests, which helps build links back to your website and can potentially drive more traffic.

According to recent data released by Shareaholic for August 2012, Pinterest sent it more traffic than Yahoo, Google-referral, Bing, StumbleUpon, and Twitter with 1.84% of total visits, bringing it to the 4th largest traffic driver worldwide.

In January 2012, Pinterest also drove more referral traffic than Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube combined; in February it beat Twitter, and in June had more than StumbleUpon, Bing, and Google. However, it’s still left far behind the big three traffic drivers: Google search, Direct and Facebook.

Boosting online sales

Pinterest is an excellent place to share great images and becoming a key referrer and sales driver for e-commerce sites. Just by adding a keyword or a weblink to the product in a pin description, users will find it easier to access the original source for their buying interests. Sellers can also include a price in the description that will then appear in the left corner of the image. Being known as a fast growing and high traffic driving source, Pinterest is now a considerable competitor to the other major social networking sites.
